A new recruiting station near South Street in Philadelphia
|
My nephew and I started going down to South Street in Philadelphia. COBU had a new outpost there with a sign hanging outside "The Better Way Cafe". We kept going down to South Street week after week. I told him South Street has nothing on Greenwich Village, you gotta see that. So my 13 year old nephew Jimmy and I go up to New York right before his summer vacation ended. I took a picture of the circle where we used to meet for COBU meetings (during the loft era) in Washington Square Park. I have this picture on the front of my tract "The Map". I handed out a few tracts up there. Down on South Street, my nephew wondered why I wouldn't talk with those from COBU, I would always continue walking. And all I would get were comments directed at me like: "What are you going to do on judgment day?" Why are they always so melodramtic? Besides, when I have spoken with them in the past, they are unable to be themselves. They build a concrete wall between you and them of scriptural dogma bricks and Stewart mortar. Then I hear they are no longer preaching the new birth. How can this be? Well now I'm really interested in getting the facts from the horse's mouth. I don't like relying on the grapevine. The story does change. So now I have a new mission: Finding out if they are really this far gone. I must go. Jimmy and I go to Jim's steaks. Afterwards, I say, let's go. And he was glad I was finally going to go in. Little did he know what fates awaited us.

The Horse's mouth: 10-9-98

Now here's a real reason to drop in, and I've got the time. We drive by the outpost "cafe" and there's Stewart inside. It's raining a lot on this friday night. We park and go to Jim's Steaks as we were hungry. While in Jim's there was a downpour. There had been downpours on and off all night. But there they are - so dedicated, out witnessing! Is that Paul Sostak? No, it's Steve Torpe (we were looking outside while waiting in line for our steaks). After eating we went to the COBU "cafe".

I look up "born" in Jn3 in the Strong's Concordance. Greek word 1080 that comes from 1085 that comes from 1096. This is what I will do: I will ask them, being born anew in Jn 3 is not being born as from a woman, so you're not born (like out of a womb) like the Jews who weren't born of fornication, or the man born blind from birth or the woman who now has joy because a child is born (Jn8,9 &16). The answer, I presume, would be yes, we're the word "born" in Jn 3 is not like the other instances of being born. Then why, I will ask, did John use the same exact Greek word in each of these cases? (1080) It doesn't make sense. So I got an idea what to say the next time I stop in. And it seems my name isn't anathema as I had thought. We drive by. Inside is Gregg Bojelie and Tim McAndrews - the joy brothers. And walking in carrying a huge circular saw is Kevin Browne. A vision of things to come.
